I got out of the house this morning.

Pandemic notwithstanding, I got up early, grabbed my mask and camera, and went to join some fellow photographers to wander around. What was supposed to be a quiet Saturday morning in a small town square turned into a lively and noisy car club meet-up. Modern, vintage, classic, custom, project: a wide variety of vehicles gathered together, owners and spectators looking and chatting.

I find automobiles very interesting. While we generally respond to the overall size, shape, color, and various features, there’s an awful lot of detail that goes into their design. So when presented with lots of metal, shiny or not, many ideas for photographs present themselves. What better place than a car club or show?

I found myself drawn to the brightly colored models, looking for lines and shapes, considering reflections, and thinking about what the deeper layers of paint might reveal in my software. I’m pleased with the results, and launched a new project page entitled Metal. It’s about turning something concrete into an idea (the reverse of the usual plan), building abstract images that make space.
